What is Passover?
Let’s start from the beginning.
Well, Passover is a holiday that is celebrated by Jewish people all over the world! People observe Passover and remember the day the Israelites escaped Egyptian slavery.
Now, there are certain dietary restrictions on this special day, which can make it a little difficult for some people to come up with ideas for what to cook or bake.
However, it is not an impossible task, especially with so many recipes already available all over the internet 🙂
What Is Not OK to Eat During Passover?
Foods that are leavened, such as bread, and other leavening agents are prohibited for Passover [this is found in Exodus 12:15].
This is known as hametz (or chametz).
Some other forbidden foods include the following grains the following:
- Oats
- Rye
- Wheat
- Spelt
- Barley
Interestingly, there are some foods that are forbidden for some Jews and acceptable for others depending on whether they follow a 2015 ruling on kitniyot foods. These foods are prohibited by Ashkenazi Jews, but are acceptable for Sephardic Jews:
- Rice
- Corn
- Lentils
- Peanuts
- Beans
[Even the oils that are derived from these foods are prohibited]
Unfortunately, many processed foods are produced in factories that manufacture products that are not OK for Passover.
For this reason, it is important to make sure that the packaged food is certified kosher for Passover if you are cooking or baking with ingredients that are pre-packaged.
Not All Kosher Ingredients for Dessert are Kosher for Passover
Please do your research and double-check for yourself!
Though a product may be kosher, it’s possible that it may not be kosher for Passover.
Potato starch, matzo meal or matzo cake meal, coconut flour, and almond flour, are popular ingredient substitutes in Passover-baked desserts.
Keep in mind, there are some Ashkenazi Jews who do not eat broken matza during Passover because they have been soaked in water. This is called gebrokts (you can read up more about this here). For this reason, it is common to bake or cook with potato starch, instead.
Also, a lot of recipes that ask for matza cake meal can be substituted with potato starch. However, I would recommend that you ask the recipe developer just to be safe.
Passover Dessert Ingredients
You may check the OU Kosher websites for your reference regarding what is OK or not OK to eat for Passover.
Some ingredients that you may need to be cautious about, and will need to research, include the following:
- Coffee
- Spices
- Sugar
- Butter
- Dried fruit
- Coconut milk
- Marshmallows
- Heavy cream
- Honey
- Vanilla extract
- Condensed milk
- Greek yogurt
- Oil
Regarding butter, I’ve read that the only butter that is OK for Passover is Breakstone’s Butter. However, feel free to let me know if you know of any other kind of butter that is OK for Passover!
FAQ: Passover Dessert Recipes
Can You Have Cake During Passover?
Well, that depends! You can eat cake that does not have a leavening agent such as flour. Actually, as stated previously, there are plenty of examples of flourless cakes that use matzo cake meal, almond flour, coconut flour, and potato starch instead.
What Makes a Dessert Kosher?
A dessert is not kosher unless it is made with kosher ingredients [many times these ingredients must be kosher-certified]. However, in the case of Passover, as mentioned before, not every item labeled kosher is kosher for Passover.
What makes a food item (and dessert) kosher depends on how it’s produced or manufactured according to certain dietary guidelines outlined in the Torah. For example, meat and dairy should not be eaten in the same meal. So, many desserts do not include milk, cream, or butter.
Other rules regarding what makes a dessert kosher include plates and utensils must be sterilized according to approved kosher practices and a kosher food item that is cooked with non-kosher food is now non-kosher.
Are Gluten-Free Baked Goods Kosher for Passover?
It is possible for some gluten-free baked goods to be kosher for Passover. However, not everything that is labeled kosher is necessarily kosher for Passover.
The reason for this is there are stricter rules and guidelines for Passover which need to be followed.
Also, there are certain gluten-free grains, like oats, that are not OK to consume during Passover.
You can read more about that here.
Is Sweetened Condensed Milk OK for Passover?
The problem with many sweetened condensed milk is that they are made with corn syrup. As mentioned before, corn and other grains are not kosher for Passover.
In order for sweetened condensed milk to be kosher for Passover, it will have to be certified as so.
What Foods are Forbidden During Passover?
There are several foods that are forbidden for Passover, but a lot of it depends on whether or not you are an Ashkenazi Jew.
Generally speaking, leavening agents (such as flour) and grains that have been fermented are not kosher for Passover.
Also, dairy products should not be consumed with meat in the same meal.
If you are uncertain about which ingredients may or may not be OK for Passover for a certain dessert or food you want to make, you can search for it on OU Kosher.
What Chocolate is Kosher for Passover?
There are several brands of chocolate that are acceptable for Passover.
Some of these brands include the following [you’ll have to check which kind of chocolate is acceptable… some are only OK for Passover in milk chocolate but not dark chocolate, for example]:
- Schmerling’s
- Shneider’s
- Glick’s
- Lieber’s
- Elite
- Zelda’s
- Bartons
- Alprose
- Torino
- Swiss Selection

1. Passover Nut Cake by Kosher in the Kitch
This recipe calls for the use of potato starch in place of all-purpose flour.

Regarding the coffee ingredient, take a look here for some useful information.
Also, click here to access the recipe.
2. Passover Mocha Cake by Country Living
This recipe calls for matzo cake meal, which is a flour substitute that is widely used for recipes during Passover.
Also, it incorporates the use of chocolate and strawberries. What a PERFECT combination!!
And look! It calls for cinnamon and cloves. Yum, yum!
3. Pecan-Carrot Cake on Martha Stewart
If you’re a fan of carrot cake and nuts, this recipe is for you!
It asks for potato starch instead of confectioner’s sugar (which is not typically kosher for Passover because it normally contains cornstarch and corn is not acceptable for some Jewish sects).
Also, make sure you have some matzo meal on hand 🙂
4. Gluten-Free Frozen Lemon Wafer Cake by Kosher.com
I absolutely love lemon-flavored cookies and cakes. This is another recipe that asks for potato starch.
Also, make sure you’ve got one or two cartons of eggs because it asks for a lot of them!
Passover Apple Cake Recipes
5. Matzo Apple Tea Cakes by Food Network
This recipe calls for unsalted matzo meal as well as potato starch. The yummy thing about this recipe is that it also requires a combination of apples, cinnamon, and sugar. AKA: HEAVEN.

You can access the recipe here.
6. Passover Apple Cake by A Baker’s House
Well, whaddya know? This recipe also calls for matzo cake meal!

Passover Sponge Cake Recipes
Sponge cakes are super popular for Passover, but what exactly are sponge cakes?

This sponge cake is similar to the recipe above, except it doesn’t require apples or water.

(I mean, most things that have 1.5 cups of sugar incorporated into the recipe are normally fine by me haha… at least for now).
9. Lemon Sponge Cake for Passover by Marilyn Dishes
Oh yay! Another lemon recipe!
This recipe asks for cake meal, which is actually the same as matzo cake meal.
It also asks for the peels of lemons. Now, there is some controversy with using fruit and vegetable peels because they are often sprayed with chemicals and other non-kosher things.
Keep this in mind and use discretion. Take a look at this video to decide for yourselves (for educational purposes only):

What can be better than chocolate cake? How about flourless chocolate cake for Passover? Maybe? I think yes, haha.
So, some of the ingredients that are required for this recipe include chocolate chips, butter, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Again, it’s a good idea to make sure the ingredients, like butter, are kosher certified for Passover.
I’ve found that vanilla extract is actually not recommended for Passover because of its alcohol base. There is, however, an approved version that can be found on Amazon. It’s called Lieber’s Imitation Vanilla Extract Kosher For Passover.
Check out the recipe here!
13. Hungarian Chocolate-Walnut Torte by Kosher Like Me
What’s better than a regular chocolate cake for Passover? How about a Hungarian chocolate walnut torte?
Oh. What is a torte?
Well, it originates from the German word for cake (makes sense) and is often filled with cream. Also, a springform pan is often used.
So, about this Passover torte. It’s a matzoh meal base and requires eggs, chocolate, sugar, and walnuts as well as other ingredients.
The recipe developer also recommends using a Passover confectioner’s sugar. They include a recipe at the end of the page… or you can just buy one from amazon. It’s called Gefen Confectioners Sugar.
Check out the recipe here.

Chocolate and oranges! That’s another delicious combination for dessert!

I’d say to be careful with the shredded coconut. Since it’s dried fruit, it may have some additives.
Check out the recipe here.
Passover Coconut Cake Recipes
Once again, since coconut is dried fruit, there is a possibility that it may contain some additives that are not kosher for Passover because it may have some additives.
