1. Soklet

This chocolate is one of the most popular Indian chocolate brands around.

The Soklet chocolate brand from India produces true “tree-to-bar” chocolate. What this means is the chocolate producer has complete control over how the cacao is grown and processed. Also, it ensures that the chocolate is made in that same country.

So, they actually grow the cocoa on their own plantations 😉

According to Bar & Cocoa, Soklet’s creation of chocolate production was a total accident!

Although the Kumar family had been growing cocoa since about 2005, they didn’t actually begin producing their own chocolate until 2015.

The Kumar family needed to find out how to increase their farm’s value. So, someone came up with the idea of making chocolate from the cacao beans they were already growing on their own farms.

Consequently, they began making chocolate in their own home without any food science knowledge and with no experience.

That’s pretty impressive, right?

Anyway, you should definitely consider trying this chocolate if you haven’t already.

They’re so delicious, AND they’ve even received an award from Biodiversity International, which is a research organization that’s mission is to help meet the challenges associated with climate change and sustainable production.

(Just an FYI, the name of this famous Indian chocolate brand is slang for how the word “chocolate” is pronounced in their local language.)

You can learn more about them on their website.  Also, Bar & Cocoa sells them on their website.

Also, they are a “farmer direct” company, which means they work directly with their farmers who harvest and process the only finest cacao.

Another interesting fact about this company is that it was started by a lawyer and sound engineer who both love chocolate. Jane (the lawyer) was trained as a chocolate maker while Fabien (the sound engineer) is French and has a love for fine food and chocolates.

Also, according to their website, they are the first Indian chocolate brand to become a USDA Organic & Fairtrade chocolate maker.

Their story of origin is actually QUITE INTERESTING and, I think, UNIQUE.

The co-founder,  Devansh Ashar, is actually a graduate of California Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. He moved back to India in the year 2009.

The idea for making artisan chocolates in India came after he found his nephew eating a chewy bar. He struck up a conversation with his nephew about why the bar wasn’t smooth melt-in-your-mouth like the Lindt Swiss chocolates.

Devansh then did a Google search for how chocolate is made and learned about the “bean-to-bar” process of making chocolate.

He then took an online chocolate-making course by Ecole Chocolat Canada.

Devansh started making chocolate for family and friends and then began selling them at local weekend markets.

He was eventually able to obtain a 400-square-foot unit from which to sell his fine, quality Indian chocolates.

Eventually, Devanish’s chocolates soon become one of the most popular chocolate brands in India!

In fact, Pascati chocolates moved to a new 4,500-square-foot facility and they are now seen and sold in many major cities around India.
