Oh, the memories of eating Mexican chocolate candy as a child in good ole Southern California. Maybe some of you are like me – super nostalgic about aspects of your childhood that bring you fond memories … like going to the market or grocery store and eating some sinful (yet delicious) Mexican candy. They were always such a great price, too! Or, perhaps, you’ve never had Mexican candy before and you’d like to give it a try. OR… perhaps you’d like to try something different for your next Christmas, Valentine’s Day, or anniversary gift for your significant other. Whatever the reason, here are some of the best chocolate candies from Mexico that you need to get your hands on.

Pssst … make sure to see below for some Mexican chocolate candy recipes!!

Paleta Payaso

The Mexican chocolate-covered marshmallow clown is one of THE MOST famous Mexican chocolate candies around.

(FYI, paleta payaso just means “clown lollipop”).

Back when I lived in Southern California, I seriously saw this Mexican chocolate-covered marshmallow clown at just about every grocery store I visited. Yes, even the “Americanized” ones, too.

It’s basically like a Mexican chocolate marshmallow lollipop, but the lollipop is shaped like a clown. The clown has a chocolate face, a gummy red mouth, and gummy blue eyes.

These chocolate lollipops come in a giant size as well as a “mini” size (which actually isn’t very mini, in my opinion).

Anyway, whether or not you think this chocolate lollipop actually looks like a clown, to me it’s SUPER delicious.

So, if you love chocolate-covered marshmallows like me, then you’ll probably like this chocolate Mexican marshmallow clown lollipop.

If you’re curious about this INSANELY popular chocolate Mexican candy, please check out the review below by two American YouTubers on Foreign Snack Reviews:

Ok, so as you can see from the video above, this candy is not one of their favorites. However, I still think you should consider trying it since I personally do love it!

And, it’s actually VERY popular in Mexico and all around North America!

Just check out all these positive reviews from Amazon to see what I mean!

(FYI, these chocolate-covered marshmallow clowns are my second-favorite Mexican candies. My absolute favorite Mexican candy is the De La Rosa Mazapan. It’s basically a soft & crumbly peanut-based candy. DELICIOUS.)

Oh! Speaking of De La Rosa Mazapan, you can buy these dipped in chocolate! Check them out on Amazon!

Mexican Paleta Payaso Strawberry Recipe

Ok, so for this recipe, you won’t be using the actual Mexican paleta payaso lollipop.

However, you will be recreating the look of the paleta payaso using chocolate-covered strawberries and gummy candy!

More specifically, these are the ingredients you will need to make this Mexican-candy-inspired recipe:

  • Edible glaze
  • Mini blue M&Ms
  • White sanding sugar
  • Trolli Sour Brite Crawlers candy
  • Strawberries
  • Chocolate for making chocolate-covered strawberries

So, now that you know what you’ll need to make this Mexican chocolate candy recipe, please take a look at the video below by Pimentel Delights to learn how to make it:

Paletón Chocolate Coated Marshmallow Lollipop

Now, this Mexican chocolate candy is SUPER similar to the one above, except it doesn’t have a clown shape on it.

(In case you’re wondering, paletón just means “large lollipop”.)

You can see a close-up of it in this super quick review by YouTuber Lucky Penny Shop:

Bubu Lubu

Ok, so this is another very popular Mexican chocolate candy I used to see in the Mexican food markets when I lived in Southern California. Similar to the candies above, I used to find Bubu Lubu being sold at the check-out lines in the “American” grocery stores, too.

So, what exactly is Bubu Lubu?

It’s a super popular Mexican candy bar that they sell all over Mexico, Southern California, and other areas that have a large Mexican or Mexican-American population.

This Mexican chocolate candy bar has a marshmallow and strawberry-like filling and it’s coated with chocolate.

Similar to the Paleta Payaso above, the Bubu Lubu is also one of my FAVORITE Mexican candies.

Just an FYI, many people enjoy eating these chocolate Mexican candy bars frozen or refrigerated.

Please, take a look at the video below by Lucky Penny Shop:

So, what do you think? Looks super delicious, right?

Well, if you don’t have a Mexican market near you and if you don’t live in an area that sells these delicious chocolate candies, luckily you can find them on Amazon!

  7. Bake the cake at 180 degrees Celsius (about 350 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 30 minutes or until the stick comes out clean
  8. Let the cakes cool on a cake rack

Strawberry jello:

  1. Hydrate the gelatine (let it rest for 10 minutes)
  2. Add sugar and boiling water to a mixing bowl and mix
  3. Next, add the jello and hydrated gelatin powder
  4. Then, add the jello mixture to a greased mold
  5. Refrigerate the jello for 15 minutes (save ½ cup of the jello mixture to use later)

Marshmallow filling:

  1. Hydrate the gelatin powder for 10 minutes
  2. In a pot, add water, sugar, and glucose
  3. Heat the mixture using medium heat
  4. Remove the pot from the stove once the mixture starts to form large bubbles
  5. Immediately add the hydrated gelatin caramel mixture you just made on the stove to a mixing bowl and mix.

  7. Reserve ½ of the marshmallow cream mixture for decorating later.

Constructing the Bubu Lubu Cake

  3. Refrigerate the jello and marshmallow for 10 minutes
  4. Take it out of the refrigerator and add the cake on top
  5. Put it back in the refrigerator for another 10 minutes
  6. In another mold, add the other cake
  7. Add the ½ cup of reserved liquid jello mixture (shown in the video around the 4:10 mark)
  8. Next, take the other cake out of the refrigerator and flip it upside down so that it makes a sandwich with the other cake (around the 4:14 mark)

Decorating the cake:

  1. Take the cake out of the mold and frost the cake all around.
  2. Melt semi-sweet chocolate and drip it over the top of the cake.
  3. Use Bubu Lubu chocolates to decorate all around the cake.
  4. You can also use the ½ cup of reserved marshmallow cream to decorate.

And that’s it!

Gansito

Another highly-favored Mexican chocolate candy bar is the Gansito.

I’m not sure why it’s called Gansito, but the literal translation is “little goose”.

Anyway, to me it’s more like a chocolate pastry than a chocolate candy bar.

(FYI, some people call these Mexican Chocolate Twinkies).

A VERY POPULAR manufacturing company called Marinela produces these chocolate snacks. Other famous Mexican chocolate snacks they produce include:

  • Pingüinos (cream-filled chocolate pastry)
  • Choco Roles (cream-filled chocolate roles with pineapple flavoring)
  • Rocko (chocolate-covered cookie sandwich)
  • Principe (chocolate cream sandwich cookie)

Similar to the Bubu Lubu above, this chocolate treat has a strawberry-jelly-like filling. It’s also filled with cream and has a chocolate coating.

Also, similar to Bubu Lubu, people enjoy eating this chocolate snack right out of the freezer or the refrigerator.

Many adults enjoy eating a Bocadín chocolate wafer cookie with a nice cup of hot coffee 😉

Anyway, if you love chocolate wafer cookies, you definitely need to give these a try!

What To Serve With Mexican Chocolate Candy

Ok, so now that you’ve gained a little bit more information on some of the best chocolate Mexican candies around, you’re probably asking what can I eat or drink with them.

Well, if you’re like me, I enjoy eating chocolate candies by themselves (no drinks or sides). The reason for this is that I love the chocolate-eating experience! I just sit there and take in the flavors involved in every bite I take.

However, some people enjoy having their chocolate treats with a little something extra. If that’s the case with you, I recommend you pair your favorite chocolate Mexican candy and Mexican chocolate candy recipes with the following:

  • Coffee
  • Milk
  • Horchata (sweet Mexican rice drink)
  • Abuelita’s Mexican hot chocolate drink
