Tibitó Chocolate (and Others)

So, Tibitó chocolate is a popular Colombian chocolate candy bar that many people LOVE!

Tibitó uses some of the finest cocoa beans in Colombia (and possibly even the world depending on who you ask).

They work directly with some of the best farmers in Colombia. Meaning, they do not work with any intermediaries. This ensures that they are getting the best products available for their consumers.

You KNOW they have to be good because they’ve won several national AND INTERNATIONAL awards. These include the following:

  • International Chocolate Awards (Colombia, Americas, & World)
  • Northwest Chocolate Festival
  • International Taste & Quality Institute
  • National Artisan Chocolate Awards

In case you’re wondering, some of the flavors they offer include Tumaco, Orange, Putumayo, and Coffee.

According to their website, here are the tasting notes for each of these flavors:

  • Tumaco: ripe banana, honey, whiskey, chamomile, marshmallow, hazelnut
  • Orange: citrus, crunchy candied orange, bitter chestnut finish
  • Putumayo: molasses, currants, woody, Syrah wine and tannins, tobacco
  • Coffee: dark roast coffee, smooth finishing mocha

Other Colombian Chocolate Candy Bars

In case you’re interested in other chocolate options, here is a list of some other popular chocolate candy bars from Colombia:

Colombian Chocolate with Cheese (Hot Chocolate Breakfast)

A SUPER DUPER popular way to have chocolate in Colombia is to consume it as a hot chocolate with cheese beverage.

Cheese?

Who would have ever thought of putting cheese in hot chocolate?

Well, let me start off by saying it’s not American cheese–it’s a special kind of cheese that they don’t normally sell at your typical American grocery store.

(On a side note, our family friends from Puerto Rico tried to make a similar Puerto Rican hot chocolate drink for us one morning here in the United States, and we didn’t have the right kind of cheese … it didn’t work out too well haha. The type of cheese is SUPER important!)

How to Make Colombian Hot Chocolate with Cheese

Here, check out this AWESOME video below by Pero Like to see what I mean about how DELICIOUS hot chocolate with cheese is from Colombia.

FYI, it’s ESPECIALLY yummy for breakfast with a side of hard bread … like a baguette.

(BTW, you HAVE TO check out the reactions of these people once they find out they’re eating cheese!!)

LOL!

BONUS: Some people like to add a tiny bit of cinnamon to their Colombian hot chocolate with cheese.

YUM!

ALSO, FYI, if you want to make authentic hot chocolate with cheese the traditional way as many Colombian people do, you can totally find a chocolatera and molinillo (pitcher for making hot chocolate and wooden chocolate mixer) on Amazon.

Cheese for Colombian Hot Chocolate

Ok, so what kind of cheese do you use for Colombian hot chocolate?

Well, there are several kinds of cheese that you can use that will work. Here are some of the more common ones:

  • Queso cuajada (a kind of Colombian cheese)
  • Campesino (a kind of Colombian cheese)
  • Mozzarella cheese

These cheeses are mildly flavored and blander than other kinds of cheese.

So, although it may be hard to find authentic Colombian cheese here in the United States, you can definitely find mozzarella cheese if all else fails.

Chocolate for Colombian Hot Chocolate

Another question many people ask is what kind of chocolate do you use for Colombian hot chocolate?

Well, here in the United States, it may be hard to find the right Colombian chocolate bar used to make Colombian hot chocolate.

However, it’s a good thing you can find it on Amazon! Lots of people in Colombia use the Corona chocolate bars for their Colombian chocolate drinks with cheese.

If for whatever reason you can’t get your hands on the Colombian chocolate bar that they use for their hot chocolate, a very good substitute is the Mexican Abuelita chocolate.

(Also, if you live in a community with a good amount of Latinos, you would easily find Abuelita brand chocolate at your local grocery store. If not, you can always grab some on Amazon.)

HOWEVER, if for some reason you can’t get your hands on either of these Latin American chocolate bars, you can always use dark chocolate bars and add a tiny bit of sugar

No, it’s not the same, unfortunately. However, regular dark chocolate is a good substitute.

The chocolates from Luker Chocolate are some of the finest in the world. Also, they are one of the world’s largest chocolate producers of fine flavor cacao beans (AKA Cacao fino de aroma in Spanish).

FYI, some people would say it’s the best chocolate in Bogota … or possibly the best chocolate in all of Colombia or even all over the world!

Anyway, these fine flavor cacao beans have a unique aroma with fruity, flowery, and nutty tones.

Also, you will find chocolates that are made with regular sugar, natural sugar alternatives, no sugar, or sugar-free chocolate varieties.

Now, here in the United States, the only Luker Chocolate distributor is located in Gurnee, Illinois.

However, if you’d like to try these fine gourmet chocolates and you’re not in Illinois, you can certainly go on their website and order some of your favorites!

(FYI, at the time of this writing, you do NOT have to be a business owner to purchase).

Now, if you’re not in the United States, you can find a local distributor here.

Also, if you have a business or a brand and would like to partner with Luker Chocolate, they can work with you to develop your own gourmet chocolate products. More specifically, they can work with you to develop the following:

Chocolate Tres Leches Cake

Ok, so this is a Colombian three milks cake with chocolate.

(The Colombians call it Torta de Tres Leches de Chocolate).

Tres leches (three milks …. Usually they include whole milk or heavy cream, condensed milk, and evaporated milk) is actually a SUPER common dessert in many Latin American countries. However, as with other foods, each country (and region … and family recipe) has its own way of making it.

As I was saying, many Colombians REALLY enjoy eating this DELICIOUS variety of Colombian chocolate cake.

Now, I gotta admit, I’m not too sure whether this is a traditional Colombian cake, but it sure has grown in popularity!! People just LOVE how this cake is super moist and super sweet, too.

Take a look at this mouthwatering tres leches chocolate cake recipe from Colombian YouTuber Sweet y Salado:
