Tater Tots

So, tater Tots are an American potato dish that I’ve noticed many people serve to kids (although there are many adults who enjoy tater tots, too).

These tater tots consist of deep-fried grated potatoes shaped into small cylindrical shapes.

Here in the United States, people normally buy them frozen and they just have to eat them up in an oven, air fryer, or microwave oven (although the texture comes out weird, in my opinion, when you heat them up in a microwave).

So, you know how I mentioned tater tots are an American food? Well, what I meant was they originated in the United States, but other countries have tater tots, too!

For example, in Korea, tater tots are called mat-gamja (맛감자) and people normally eat them out of a cup with a spicy gochujang-based sauce.

In Canada, they have something similar to tater tots which they call tasti taters.

Also, Australians and New Zealanders call tater tots potato pom-poms, potato royals, or potato gems.

Three Bean Salad

So, this kind of salad is very popular in the United States. Three bean salads generally consist of, at a minimum, three different kinds of beans in a vinaigrette dressing. Many times people like to use green beans, wax beans, and lima beans.

Also, what many people love about three bean salad is that it is SO EASY to make!! The reason for this is that a lot of recipes ask for canned beans.

If you’re interested in a classic three-bean salad recipe, you can check this one out on All Recipes.

Thumbprint Cookies

Do you love shortbread cookies? So, thumbprint cookies are a kind of shortbread cookie with jam in the center.

Actually, thumbprint cookies are a kind of Swedish cookie called hallongrotta

When I was younger, I used to enjoy Knott’s Berry Farm Cookies, which are a kind of thumbprint cookie.

[Have you tried them? Knott’s Berry Farm is now an amusement park in California, but it was once a small berry farm owned by a local family. Knott’s sells its berry jams, preserves, and syrups all over the park and people love and eat them all over the United States – even me!]

I recommend you try the Knott’s Berry Farm cookies (and preserves)! If you’re interested in trying them, you can order Knott’s Berry Farm cookies online on Amazon.

Turkey

If you don’t already know, turkey is a super, duper popular kind of meat that many people eat all over the United States. It’s ESPECIALLY popular and in VERY high demand during the holidays, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.

Outside of the holiday seasons, many people in the United States prefer eating turkey over red meats because they are lower in fat and calories but they are high in protein. Also, turkey is a great source of iron, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and B vitamins (University of Illinois).

Tilapia

This fish is a very common kind of freshwater fish that many people all over the United States enjoy eating for lunch or dinner alongside vegetables or potatoes.

Also, many people enjoy buying, cooking, and eating tilapia because it’s relatively inexpensive, it’s easy to cook, and it has a mild taste compared to other kinds of fish.

Toast

So, toast is basically bread that has been browned by heat (normally in a toaster or toaster oven). This results in a firmer texture which makes it easier to spread toppings onto it, such as butter or jams.

Tenderloin

Are you ever looking at a recipe that asks for a certain cut of meat and you’re super unaware of what the heck it is?

Is that just me?

Oh, OK, haha!

Anyway, tenderloin is a cut of meat located in the loin of beef. Tenderloin has a different name in different countries. This is what I mean:

  • Australasia: Eye fillet
  • France:  Filet
  • Brazil: Filé mignon
  • The United Kingdom & South Africa: Fillet

FYI, the three parts of the tenderloin are the butt, center-cut, and tail.

Twix

Any chocolate-lovers out there?

If you are not already aware of this, Twix is a very popular chocolate candy bar here in the United States. It’s actually one of my favorites because I LOVE the crunchy texture!

Twix is made of a long shortbread covered in caramel and milk chocolate. It’s totally delicious!

Lucky for you, if you’ve never had it before, you can buy the value pack on Amazon.

Tetrazzini

Ok, tetrazzini sounds like an Italian dish, because it’s named after an Italian opera singer, but it’s actually American.

People often make it with chicken or turkey, pasta noodles, and a creamy cheese sauce. I would say it’s easiest to bake this dish in a casserole dish.

Taro

Have you ever seen people carrying around a purple drink with little black balls in it? If so, it’s likely they’re drinking a taro milk tea with boba.

YUM!

So, what exactly is taro?

Well, taro is a purple root that grows in tropical climates. It’s a staple food in South Asian, African, and Oceanic cuisines and its texture is very similar to yams.

Also, taro is also very similar to another kind of yam called ube. However, one of the differences between taro and ube is taro has pale flesh with purple specks and ube has bright purple flesh.

I’ve also heard that ube is a little sweeter.

Tea Egg

If you’ve never heard of tea eggs before, they’re basically boiled eggs that you slightly crack after they’re boiled and then you boil them again in tea.

Another name for them is a marble egg because of the marble-like coating that you see after you boil it in tea.

Also, similar to how we in the United States eat hard-boiled eggs as a snack, the Chinese also eat tea eggs as a snack.

Tea eggs are SUPER EASY to make, and they’re quite interesting, too!

Take a look at the video below by Chinese Healthy Cook to see what I’m talking about:

Theeyal

This is a South Indian soup dish that consists of toasted coconut flakes, tamarind water, vegetables, dried red chili, coriander seeds, and fenugreek. The combination of all of these ingredients results in a dark brown color, which is why this dish literally translates to “burnt dish”.

Interested? I found a recipe video for you by Shaan Geo. Unfortunately, it’s not in English.

FORTUNATELY, you can access English subtitles.

All you need to do for the English subtitles is first to click on the settings icon, which looks like a gear.  Then, click on subtitles. Next, click on English.

Thengai Sadam

So, if you’ve never heard of this before, thengai sadam is South Indian coconut rice. People make it by using freshly grated coconut, spices, curry leaves, and rice.

Oh, and in some versions, you can even use coconut milk!

Interested in learning more? Well, then here is an easy-to-follow thengai sadam recipe by the Indian food blogger page, Dassana’s Veg Recipes.

Thandai

  • Fennel seeds
  • Almonds
  • Pepper
  • Poppy seeds
  • Melon seeds
  • Cardamom
  • Rose petals
  • Saffron
  • Sugar

Even though it may sound a little difficult to make for some people, it’s actually not that hard!

Take a look at the video below by Cooking with TJ’s Kitchen to see what I mean:

Thukpa

How many of you enjoy eating chicken noodle soup?

Well, thukpa is a kind of noodle soup that originates in Tibet and it often includes chicken.

However, there are so many different versions and flavors of this common dish. This thukpa recipe with ginger and green chilis is just one of many you can find online.

Tofu

Another term for tofu is bean curd and it’s made by coagulating soy milk. Tofu is SUPER common in Asian dishes and is a great substitute for recipes that require meat.

The flavor is super subtle, making it easy to season or marinate and use in just about any dish as an additional source of protein.

Tempeh

Ok, so tempeh, sometimes spelled tempe, is a kind of Indonesian food. People make it with fermented soybeans and is a great source of protein for many people.

Also, it’s very similar to tofu, except tempeh is more nutrient-dense, which could be because tempeh is made from fermented soybeans while tofu is not.

Tempura

This is a common Japanese food that you can find in many sushi restaurants. It’s pretty tasty, too, especially when you dip it into soy sauce.

In case you don’t know what it is, tempura is vegetables or meat that are covered with a batter and deep-fried.

I love vegetable tempuras, like carrots and broccoli, and totally recommend you try them if you haven’t!

Tangyuan

So, tangyuan is another example of food that start with T.

In this case, tangyuan is a Chinese dessert that people make using glutinous rice flour and water.  It’s very popular to eat during the Chinese Lantern Festival (and weddings, too).

To make this sweet dessert, you’ll need to mix the glutinous rice flour with boiling water, roll it into smaller balls once, and then boil them. Lastly, people normally serve them in a sweet syrup.

Check out this SUPER INFORMATIONAL video by Chinese Cooking Demystified to learn more:

Doesn’t tangyuan look SOOoooOOO delicious!!??

Teriyaki

Ok, so teriyaki is not necessarily a sauce like I thought for so many years. Actually, teriyaki refers to a Japanese cooking method in which you cook (normally grill) meat in a  soy sauce, mirin, and sugar mixture.

The flavors are so delicious. You NEED to try teriyaki if you’ve never tried it before!

Tamari

This is a Japanese sauce that closely resembles soy sauce. Like soy sauce, tamari is also made from fermented soybeans.

However, one of the main differences between the two is that tamari does not contain wheat (or it contains a very little amount of it).

For this reason, you can usually use tamari as a gluten-free alternative to soy sauce (of course, you’d have to check the bottle to make sure it does not contain wheat).

You know what?

Some people say tamari is even more flavorful than soy sauce! If you’re interested in trying it and you can’t find it at a grocery store near you, you can totally order it here on Amazon.

Tonkatsu

This is another example of food that start with T. Tonkatsu is basically a Japanese breaded and deep-fried pork cutlet.

(Can someone say, “YUM”)?

People normally eat it with tonkatsu sauce and they serve it with rice and shredded cabbage.

Tom Yum

This is a kind of hot and sour Thai soup. (Keep in mind that some people spell it, Tom Yam).

Some of the basic ingredients in this hot soup include:

  • Red chili peppers
  • Lemongrass
  • Lime juice
  • Kaffir lime leaves
  • Fish sauce
  • Galangal (similar to ginger)

If you’re interested in making this soup, you can actually buy tom yum paste online and then add some to boiling water, vegetables, and shrimp. Check out the product description on this Amazon page for more information.

Tandoori Chicken

Yummy! Tandoori chicken! I love this stuff so much! So, tandoori chicken is an Indian chicken dish that you, traditionally, make in a tandoor clay oven.

Before cooking, many people marinate the chicken in yogurt and spices and then serve it on rice after cooking for a flavor-packed dish.

Tahu Gejrot

This is an Indonesian fried tofu dish that you make with a sweet and spicy sauce. If you’re interested in learning more about tahu gejrot, you can find a recipe for it on this page by Daily Cooking Quest.

Tahu Sumedang

This is a savory deep-fried tofu dish from Indonesia. People know it by the creamy inner texture and crispy outer texture that comes from deep frying.

Take a look at the Youtube video below by Bu Emma Kitchen to see what I mean:

Takoyaki

The literal translation of this Japanese snack is octopus balls. So, even though it’s a Japanese snack or street food, it’s also very popular in Taiwan.

You make it out of a wheat flour batter, octopus, tempura batter scraps, green onion, pickled ginger, a special takoyaki sauce that’s similar to Worcestershire sauce, mayonnaise, and green laver (aonori–sea cabbage).

Then, you cook it, traditionally, in a molded pan called a takoyaki pan (takoyaki-ki).

If you want a better idea of what this is, please check out the YouTube video below by Kimono Mom:

So, tangbao is a Chinese soup-filled steam bun. Some people call them guantang bao or soup-filled buns.

It’s SUPER yummy and I highly, highly recommend you try them!

Tokneneng

Sometimes you’ll see it spelled, tukneneng.  Tokneneng is Filipino street food and it’s basically hard-boiled quail eggs that are covered in an orange batter and deep-fried.

Ttongppang

This is a kind of bread that people sell in Korean street markets. The literal translation to English is feces bread.

Good thing it doesn’t taste like feces!!

Koreans make this with walnuts and red bean paste and the only resemblance of feces is its shape (thank goodness).

Turon

I haven’t had Filipino turon in SO many years, but I used to have it A LOT when I lived in Southern California.

Filipino turon is a kind of lumpia dessert (lumpia is like a spring roll). The most common kind is turón na saging, which is my absolute FAVORITE!

You make turón na saging by slicing frying bananas or plantains and wrapping them in spring roll wrappers. Then you deep fry them (if you want, you can deep-fry them with some brown sugar).

Here’s a video by Nic & Rei so you can see it with your own eyes.

Warning… it makes your mouth WATER like crazy!! It’s so sweet and yummy!

Tonjiru

So, tonjiru is yet another food that start with T. Another word for it is butajiru and it’s a Japanese pork soup. It’s similar to miso soup, except you put pork and vegetables in it.

Tiramisu

So, many of us have had or at least have heard of tiramisu before. It’s an Italian coffee-flavored dessert that so many people love!!

Some of the basic ingredients for tiramisu are ladyfingers (long-shaped sweet sponge cakes), cocoa powder, coffee, egg yolks, sugar, and mascarpone cheese (Italian cream cheese).

Yum, yum!

Tagliatelle

This is a type of pasta from Italy that is long and flat, like a ribbon. Tagliatelle is strong and tough, making it a suitable pasta for recipes that require thick sauces with meat, such as bolognese sauce.

Tapenade

So, tapenade is a French condiment spread that’s made with black olives, anchovies, and capers. Most of the time you’ll see it spread on bread for flavor.

It’s super easy to make and you can find a great recipe by Cookie and Kate by clicking here.

Torte

A torte is a multilayered, and very sweet, cake that you fill with cream and jams or fruit. Arguably the best-known tortes include the following:

  • Germany: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte
  • Hungary: Dobos torte
  • France: Gâteau St. Honoré and Gâteau Alcazar

Tortellini

This is a kind of Italian pasta that you stuff with meat, cheese, or both. Many people either make them fresh or buy them from the store already made (normally they’re refrigerated or frozen).

Here in the United States, you can easily find them in the frozen food sections (or refrigerated food section) of your grocery store.

Taleggio

So, taleggio is a kind of soft Italian cheese. It has a mild to moderate flavor and people usually use it in salads or in dishes that ask for melted cheese, such as risotto,

So many of us, right? If that’s you, you’ll love this snack from Spain.

 It’s a fried bacon snack!

Although they’re super fattening, many people still eat them because they’re so delicious.

(Other Spanish-speaking countries call them chicharrones).

To make them, many people use thick slabs of bacon or pork belly. Check out Bake Street if you’d like to learn more.

List of Hispanic or Latin American Food That Start With T

food words that start with t mexican torta on a plate.
Mexican torta sandwich

Tacos

Yes! Tacos! I would say tacos are arguably the United States’ favorite kind of Mexican food!  It’s oh-so-delicious!

Tacos are traditional Mexican food that you eat with your hands. They typically consists of a corn or flour tortilla you top with meat, vegetables (like lettuce and tomatoes), shredded or crumbled cheese, and salsa or guacamole.

To eat it, you kind of fold the taco in half and use your hands to guide it into your mouth.

If you’re here in the United States, and if you don’t want to make tacos at home and you don’t have any typical Mexican food restaurants nearby, I would say the tacos you get from the fast-food restaurant, Chipotle, are pretty good (although not authentic).

Tamales

Mexican tamales are a kind of food that you make with masa dough and fill with meat. Then you cover them in a corn husk and steam them and eat them with a fork.

If you’re interested in learning more about tamales, you can read more about them on my Instant Pot Tamales recipes page.

Tomatillo

Ok, I grew up hearing Costa Rican Spanish, which is different from Mexican Spanish. However, having grown up in southern California, most of my Hispanic or Latino friends were Mexican or Mexican American.

To me, the word tomate meant tomato in English. However, while I was learning to cook some Mexican dishes from my Mexican roommate in college, I learned that a tomate in Mexican Spanish is actually a little green vegetable that looks a lot like a red tomato (except green). They call the red tomato a jitomate.

Don’t get that confused with tomatillo!

In Mexican Spanish, a tomatillo is similar to a tomate in that they are both shaped like a tomato and are green.

However, the tomatillo is what we call in English a Mexican Husk Tomato because it has a type of paper-like covering.

Similar to tomatoes, the tomatillo is a very popular ingredient in traditional Mexican salsa recipes.

Tortilla

If you’re not already aware, tortillas are very common in Mexican, Central American, and South American cuisines.

They are unleavened flatbreads that you make with maize hominy meal (kind of like corn).

Also, tortillas are an essential ingredient in meals like tacos, taquitos, and enchiladas, but they also serve as a side for dishes like rice and beans.

Tamarillo

So, tamarillo is an egg-shaped fruit that’s very common in South America and it is very similar to a typical tomato. However, many people in South America enjoy eating tamarillo in juice form by blending it with water and sugar.

If you’re wondering about the taste, some people say it tastes like a passion fruit and tomato combination. Actually, compared to a tomato, it’s sweeter and tangier (NPR: Getting the Taste of the Tamarillo).

Taquitos

Yay, taquitos! They are another one of my Mexican food favorites!

In English, taquito means little taco. If you’ve never heard of a taquito before, it’s basically a taco that’s rolled up and deep-fried. SUPER DELICIOUS.

[Obviously, because of their small size, taquitos do not contain all of the ingredients that a taco has. Normally I’ve seen taquitos filled with flavored meat and maybe some cheese and then placed on a plate and topped with sour cream or guacamole].

Torta

Ok, so tortas can be so many different things depending on the country.

Yes, as mentioned earlier, the Spanish language can be SO CONFUSING!

(Check out my page about 31 Food with Different Spanish Names in Different Countries to see what I mean).

So, this is what a torta is in the following countries:

    • Mexico: a certain kind of sandwich made of a fluffy bun and often filled with refried beans, meat, and other ingredients
    • South America: cake
    • Philippines: a type of omelet

Do you see what I mean when I say Spanish (or Spanish-influenced languages) can be confusing sometimes?

Tostada

Ok, a tostada is another very yummy Mexican food dish! I actually eat them a lot.

You can basically think of tostadas as flat tacos. They basically consist of the same ingredients, except it may be a little harder to keep all of the ingredients from falling, haha.

If you’re interested in learning more about tostadas, please check out my page on How to Eat Tostadas.

Tripas

In Mexican cuisine, tripas are grilled small intestines of a pig or cow (normally). The English version of tripas is chitlins. Many people like to eat tripas in tacos.

Tomato

So, many of us use tomatoes in our everyday cooking. Although many people use tomatoes as they would a vegetable, botanically, tomatoes are actually a fruit!

Originally, they came from South America and Central America, but today people from all over the world can grow and eat tomatoes.

Not sure if you’re interested in knowing this, but the word tomato comes from the Mexican Nahuatl word tomatl, which eventually evolved into the word tomate in Spanish.

Also, many people from all over enjoy eating tomatoes raw, like in salads for example, or they cook them, like in stews.

Tejocote

Some people call this the Mexican Hawthorne and it’s a type of fruit that many people eat in Mexico.

It resembles a crabapple and people either eat it raw, canned, or they can cook it. In fact, many people use tejocote in Mexican hot fruit punch recipes, which they call ponche

According to this video below by Weird Explorer, there is a chance that this fruit is actually smuggled A LOT here in the United States!!

Check out this VERY INTERESTING YouTube video to learn more (he also includes a tejocote recipe for you at about the 4:24 mark)!

I recognize it by its VERY strong green colors and taste!

You make tabbouleh is made with parsley, mint, tomatoes, onions, and bulger wheat. Then, you top it off (and then mix it) with lemon juice, olive oil, and salt.

Here’s a video by Feelgoodfoodie in case you still don’t know what it is:

Toum

Ok, so toum is a kind of Lebanese garlic sauce.

(Who loves garlic? I SURE DO!)

You can use this sauce on your grilled chicken, as a spread on your sandwiches, or with your french fries.
