What is Tteokbokki?

Well, before we talk about rose tteokbokki, we must first talk about tteokbokki (for those who are not already familiar with this delicious Korean food).

As mentioned in my Street Food from Korea page, tteokbokki is a spicy-stir fried rice cake (although there are non-spicy variations as mentioned previously).

Although it kind of reminds me of a pasta dish, Korean tteokbokki is actually made from a long, cylinder-shaped rice cake that’s made with rice flour.

I must add, it’s super versatile, too! Just like pasta!

Some of the different Korean tteokbokki variations include the following:

  • Haemul-tteok-bokki (seafood tteokbokki)
  • Galbi-tteokbokki (marinated grilled ribs)
  • Jajang-tteokbokki (sweet bean sauce)
  • Jeukseok-tteok-bokki (hot pot tteokbokki)
  • Curry tteokbokki
  • Rose tteokbokki

However, in this article, we will be focusing on rose tteokbokki.

FAQs

What is Rose Tteokbokki?

Rose tteokbokki is a type of stir-fried Korean rice cake dish that is made with a spicy Korean gochujang sauce and cream (or milk).

This spicy dish is a fairly recent Korean food trend that has hit Korean street markets and home kitchens, too.

Although tteokbokki is known for its spiciness, rose tteokbokki is a tamer version because we add milk or cream.

In case you are unaware of this, other popular names for this dish you may have hard are Rose Carbonara Tteokbokki and Rose Cream Tteokbokki.

Why Is It Called Rose Tteokbokki?

We call this kind of tteokbokki “rose tteokbokki” because of its red hue. Actually,  the color is very similar to rose pasta sauce, which is made from tomatoes and cream.

However, what makes this kind of tteokbokki different from rose pasta is that the red color is mainly derived from Korean red chili paste (gochujang) and Korean red chili pepper powder (gochugaru).

What is Rose Sauce made of in Korean Cuisine?

Rose sauce in rose tteokbokki is made primarily from gochujang, gochugaru, and heavy cream. Some recipes use tomato paste, too.

However, depending on the recipe, other ingredients may also include the following:

  • Sugar
  • Milk
  • Korean soup stock
  • Parmesan cheese

Again, each recipe is different, but these are the basic ingredients.

What Does Tteokbokki Taste Like?

Tteokbokki is chewy and it’s normally spicy, too. Depending on which kind of tteokbokki you make, it can be sweet and savory, as well.

Is Korean Tteokbokki Healthy?

Korean tteokbokki is not considered a healthy food. The reason for this is that tteokbokki is a processed food (the white rice from which is made is processed) and it’s often cooked with fatty sauces.

Is Rose Tteokbokki Spicy?

It’s spicy, but it’s a much milder version of the original Korean tteokbokki dish.

Now, what if you don’t live near any Korean or Asian markets and you REALLY want to try a tteokbokki recipe?

I seriously could not find ANY rice cakes near me. Oh, of course, I could have just gotten a recipe for rice cakes online. However, I wanted to try tteokbokki like right away! So, you want to know what I did?

I just bought the rice cakes for tteokbokki online on Amazon lol!!

You can do that too! And I even made my own rose tteokbokki since I don’t do well with hot spicy foods.

All I did was buy the O’Food Tteokbokki Rice Cakes with Gochujang Sauce and make it per the instructions on the back.

Then, after it was done cooking, I added some heavy whipping cream. It really helped to tame down the spiciness!

And, let me tell you … it was sOOoooOOOoo delicious!

A little spice, some sweetness, and just all around yummy. (I ESPECIALLY loved the chewiness of the rice cakes).

Of course, there is always that possibility that homemade tteokbokki would taste better, but this was seriously yummy!

AND it’s super inexpensive, too, because it comes in 2 packages!

I highly, highly, highly recommend you try it! Even though I didn’t include this, only because I was being lazy, the package recommends you add the following ingredients:

  • Green onions
  • Boiled egg
  • Fish cake
  • Cheese

You can find it here.
